Chautauqua Circle is one of a number of Circles that are part of the Ontario Branch of the International Order of The King’s Daughters and Sons (IOKDS) – a Christian service organization with members in both the United States and Canada.
The purpose of the Circle, formed in 1989, is to support and build upon the close relationship established between IOKDS and the Chautauqua Institution which is located near Jamestown, N.Y.
Meetings are normally held four times a year and include a potluck meal in the Lounge of The King’s Daughter and Sons’ Apartment Building on Cambridge Street in Ottawa.
On occasion, the potluck meal is followed by a Loonie Auction which always proves to be an entertaining way to raise funds for Circle projects.
In addition to supporting the activities of The King’s Daughters and Sons, Circle members raise funds to contribute donations to the Clergy Week program at Chautauqua, and organize the annual Ontario Branch Week at the Chautauqua Institution.
Another project in which the Circle has recently become involved is as liaison between the Ottawa City Union and Centre 454 – which includes supporting a literacy program for marginalized members of society in Ottawa’s downtown.
