The International Order of The King’s Daughters and Sons (IOKDS) is an international, interdenominational organization of Christian men and women whose aim is to carry out religious, educational, and philanthropic projects as a service to their communities.
IOKDS demonstrates a commitment to education through the provision of a variety of annual scholarships at the International level, and at the Branch, Union and Circle level. Some scholarships are in the form of endowments and the management of those rests with the university or college.
Ontario Branch also receives and manages funds in Canada in order to co-sponsor Canadian students who apply for the International Health Careers, Student Ministry, and Native American Scholarships (Indigenous Student in Canada). These funds are held by the Ontario Branch Treasurer in Canada and Ontario Branch sends their half of the scholarship money directly to the student’s university/college once the application has been approved.
The following three scholarships are managed and funded jointly by IOKDS (International) and Ontario Branch:
Joint International/Ontario Branch Scholarships
STUDENT MINISTRY
In 1959, a committee from the International Order was formed to focus on foreign students studying for the ministry. This grew to a department in 1970 and was opened to all ministerial students. Scholarships are given through an accredited university to graduate students who are citizens of the U.S. or Canada and who are studying for a Master of Divinity degree. The scholarship money is deposited directly with the school. Scholarships are awarded at the beginning of the academic year and are for the entire academic year.
Ontario’s contribution to this scholarship comes from The Phoebe McLelland Student Ministry Scholarship Fund.
HEALTH CAREERS
The Health Careers Scholarship Program was started in May 1976. It is supported entirely through individual contributions of the Order’s members through their Circles or Branch. Students preparing for careers in medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, physical or occupational therapy, and selected medical technologies are eligible to apply. The scholarship money is deposited directly with the school. Scholarships are awarded at the beginning of the academic year and are for the entire academic year.
Ontario’s contribution to this scholarship comes from The Elizabeth Holdam Health Careers Scholarship Fund.
NATIVE AMERICAN
Miss Lida Chesnut organized the work with Native Americans starting in 1934. A generous memorial fund was later established for Miss Chesnut and it was the beginning of the Native American Scholarship Fund. The first scholarship was given in 1963. The funds are received from contributions made by individuals, Circles, Branches, and from various bequests. The student must personally apply to the International Director Native American Program. Written documentation of Reservation Registration of the student or parents must be provided. There are no restrictions as to tribal affiliation. Indigenous students in Canada are also eligible to apply for this scholarship. The scholarship money is deposited directly with the school. Scholarships are awarded at the beginning of the academic year and are for the entire academic year.
Ontario’s contribution to this scholarship comes from The Christine Dawson Scholarship Fund for Indigenous Students.
Further information on these scholarships and details about eligibility and the application process can be found on the International website at www.iokds.org.
Ontario Branch Arts/Science Scholarship
Ontario Branch has also established a scholarship that is not a co-sponsored scholarship with the International level of IOKDS. This new scholarship is for students studying in the fields of Arts and Science. The name of the scholarship is the Phyllis Lyon Arts and Social Sciences Scholarship. The total amount of the award money will be paid by Ontario Branch.
