Project of Heart – Residential School Interactive Project

A few years ago, our government apologized to our First Nations people for the injustice that had been done for generations. For over 100 years, Aboriginal children were removed from their families and sent to institutions called residential schools. The government-funded, church-run schools were located across Canada and established with the purpose to eliminate parental involvement in the spiritual, cultural and intellectual development of Aboriginal children. The last residential schools closed in the mid-1990s. During this chapter in Canadian history, more than 150,000 First Nations, Métis, and Inuit children were forced to attend these schools some of which were hundreds of miles from their home. The cumulative impact of residential schools is a legacy of unresolved trauma passed from generation to generation and has had a profound effect on the relationship between Aboriginal peoples and other Canadians. Founder’s Day 2014

FOUNDER’S DAY THE KING’S DAUGHTERS AND SONS, OTTAWA JANUARY 18, 2014 We are gathered today to not only meet over business of the Ottawa City Union of The King’s Daughters and Sons, but to recall to mind and to appreciate the founders of our very dear organization. So I say Happy Founder’s Day. It’s not every organization that can mark this milestone date. The organization has to have been around for a long time. So what is Founder’s Day? I think it’s an occasion to celebrate our organization and its beginning. Bring out the birthday cake. It’s a time to commemorate those ladies who had vision, courage and faith. Thanks! It’s a time to reflect on the founding principles, the reasons the founders had for coming together and forming a group.
